about

Our new version of the traditional song which Nina found the words to in William Henry Hadow's 'Songs of The British Islands' - an old schools songbook full of folk songs from the early 1900s.

Originally set to a 17th Century tune, Nina reset the words to a new tune as, being a no-nonsense, outdoorsy Northern lass herself, the lyrics really appealed. With tongue in cheek Mark and Simon, the two Southern born members of the band, decided that adding the tune 'Cock O' The North' into the song would be a perfect fit!

This is a digital single from our new album HEROES (which is set for release as a CD and as a digital download/stream on 29th April).

lyrics

A North country lass up to London did pass
Although with her nature it did not agree
Which made her repent and so often lament
Still wishing again in The North for to be

O the oak and the ash and the bonny ivy tree
They flourish at home in my own country

O fain would I be in The North country
Where the lads and the lasses are making of hay
For there should I see what is pleasant to me
A mischief on them who enticed me away

I like not the court nor the city resort
Since there is no fancy for such maids as me
Their pomp and their pride I can never abide
Because with my humour it does not agree
